Background to the role
A family based in Park City, Utah, is seeking an exceptional full-time tutor to work with their three children, aged sixteen, fourteen and twelve, who attend a private school in Salt Lake City and public school in Park City.
The family relocated from London to Utah three years ago and their children have benefitted from one-to-one tuition alongside school. As the children enter a higher standard of academics, a tutor is required with greater subject expertise and the ability to provide strategy, structure and support for the children’s academic goals.
The eldest student is a highly capable and structured thinker with particular strengths in Math and Sciences, as well as being capable across English and History. He is a highly independent and self-directed learner who has a clear sense of his own academic needs and goals, communicating these effectively to those working with him. He will be applying to colleges in two years. Having previously played soccer at club level with aspirations of playing collegiately, he made the deliberate decision to redirect his focus toward academics while still playing on the varsity team at school. He is passionate about film and founded a film club at his school.
The fourteen year old student will be starting High School in the Fall, and is a straight A student who is highly capable across her subjects. She has navigated a challenging transition in her schooling, having moved from a private school in Salt Lake City to public school in Park City, where her grades have improved considerably. An area of academic focus for the student is her Mathematics, although significant progress has been made already over the past six months. She has a mild learning disorder in reading, which affects her reading comprehension to a small extent, and she has recently started learning Spanish at school. She is passionate about dance, which she practices five days per week, and has a keen interest in pottery.
She is not a student who naturally self-advocates or volunteers herself in a learning environment, however she is highly capable and hardworking, with the focused and disciplined mentality that her commitment to dance reflects, but she will need a tutor with confidence and presence to bring out the best in her. Of the three students, she is the one the family are most focused on with respect to the tutor’s support and guidance as she’s starting in high school.
The youngest student will be entering 8th grade. He is a very capable mathematician and a highly sociable individual with a charismatic and expressive personality. He is naturally creative and has a strong artistic flair, which the family would like to see further developed with the support of a tutor, alongside his academics.
All three students are motivated in their studies and hold themselves to high academic standards. However, they have not yet developed a genuine love of reading. Sparking this interest is an area of focus that applies to all three of the students.
The students maintain demanding schedules with their extracurricular activities, particularly dance and volleyball, and the tutor will need to work fl exibly around these commitments.
Duties of the tutor
The tutor will provide comprehensive academic support to all three students, each week working with them three weekdays after school and on both weekend days. A reduced timetable will also take place during school holidays. The tutor must be able to adapt their approach to meet the distinct needs of each student, encompassing both immediate needs and long-term strategy towards academic ambitions.
An important principle for the family is that the students themselves should drive the relationship with the tutor. The tutor's role is to respond to and build upon each student's own motivations, directions and goals, rather than to impose a fixed structure upon them. At the outset the tutor should audit each student’s current knowledge level and technical skills, in order to identify and fill any gaps in their understanding and to form the basis of the curriculum the tutor will develop for each child.
With the fourteen year old, the tutor will continue to build on the progress she has made, working to strengthen her confidence and capabilities in Mathematics whilst supporting her with reading strategies that accommodate her mild reading disorder and increase her enjoyment and desire to read in general. The tutor should help her develop effective study habits and begin preparing for the demands of High School and the college pathway beyond, working flexibly around her intensive dance schedule. The approach should be encouraging and collaborative, focusing on building her confidence in both her work and expressing her ideas.
For the eldest student, the tutor will provide rigorous academic support with a particular focus on his APs and standardized testing (SAT and/or ACT), although the family already engages a specialist tutor to assist in this regard. The student is clear on his academic needs and will communicate these to the tutor. Ultimately, the tutor should establish an excellent organisational structure with clear goals, milestones, and timelines to ensure the student is optimally positioned for his college applications to highly competitive institutions. Teaching across his Advanced Placement courses will be essential, deepening his understanding of the subjects, building exam technique, and developing the critical thinking and analytical skills necessary for college.
Whilst the tutor should be able to teach most of his subjects, any gaps in expertise can be supplemented with specialist tutors providing online tuition. The tutor should also be prepared to coordinate with specialist tutors for any AP subjects that fall outside their primary expertise.
For the youngest student, the tutor will work to channel his natural talent and amiability into productive academic engagement. Building on his strength in Mathematics, the tutor should challenge him appropriately whilst also supporting him across his other subjects, exploring them to greater depth and breadth according to the student’s interests to develop his knowledge and technical skills whilst cultivating a joy in learning.
A particular objective is to instil an enjoyment in reading in all the children, and generally developing educational habits which will serve them well in their academic lives and beyond.
The tutor must be highly organised and able to manage the logistics of working with three students at different academic levels, each with demanding schedules. Flexibility will be essential, particularly in accommodating the sports commitments that form an important part of the students' lives, and adapting the timetable of lessons as necessary to accommodate the family’s other commitments. Picking the students up from school and their extracurricular activities may also form part of the tutor’s responsibilities.
Desired tutor profile
The ideal candidate will be someone who can bring academics to life, making learning engaging and enjoyable for the younger students whilst providing the structure, rigour, and strategic planning necessary for the eldest student's college preparation. The ability to balance warmth and enthusiasm with academic authority and organisational capability will be essential to success in this role.
The tutor should have a strong academic background with a good degree from a top college or university and extensive experience teaching or tutoring at all ages of high school. Expertise in teaching Mathematics and English is essential, as is the ability to teach across a broad range of subjects within the humanities and sciences. Experience with Advanced Placement curricula and college admissions preparation, particularly for highly competitive colleges, will be highly valuable. Knowledge of standardized testing (ACT/SAT) preparation is also important.
Experience working with students with learning differences, particularly dyslexia and ADHD, will be an important asset, as will familiarity with evidence-based strategies for supporting reading comprehension. Knowledge of either Spanish or Mandarin would be an advantage, reflecting the languages the students are currently studying, though this is the least critical of the desired attributes.
A musical background, and the ability to teach piano and cello in particular, would be welcomed. An interest in sport will also be desirable. Above all, the successful candidate will be confident, energetic and invested in their students' development. They should be someone who commands natural authority and friendliness without being overly familiar, and who has the presence and enthusiasm to bring out the best in the students. The tutor should be someone who can provide both academic rigour and mentorship to all the children as they embark on the increasing demands of their academic careers.
