About
My name is Umar Suraka, a hard-working and result-oriented teacher who has a total of 14 years of experience in teaching and educational leadership experience in junior and senior high schools in Ghana. My current role is that of a subject teacher of English Language, Social Studies, and Religious Studies at Forces Senior High Technical School (Forces SHTS). I have held a number of leadership and administrative positions, which help to improve the school as a whole.
My instructional philosophy rests on the principle of learner-centred and standards-based learning, and places great emphasis on critical thinking, character development and holistic development of the student. Within the past years, I have been able to create and execute interesting lessons based on the GES and WAEC guidelines and apply the assessment data to guide instructions and assist different students.
Outside the classroom, I have also acquired a lot of experience on educational leadership and school administration. I am a Deputy Head of Department (Social Science), PLC Coordinator, Form Master and Staffroom Committee Chairperson at Forces SHTS. I am also Secretary and a major member of School Improvement Committee where I assist in strategic planning and institutional development. These positions have bolstered my ability to collaborate, mentor and engage stakeholders.
Previously, I was employed at Donkorkrom Islamic Junior High School as a subject teacher, assistant head teacher, curriculum leader, and guidance coordinator, as well as assisting with the academic leadership and student welfare. I have also worked as a part-time educational consultant and tutor by assisting teachers to develop professionally as well as enhance the instructional practices in the private educational institutions.
I hold a B.Ed. in Psychology and Foundations of Education (English) from the University of Cape Coast and am presently undertaking two master's degrees: an M.Ed. course in Counselling Psychology at the University of Education, Winneba, and an M.Ed. course in Educational Planning and Administration at KNUST.
I have engaged in a lot of professional development, such as the training in standards-based curriculum implementation, assessment, ICT integration, artificial intelligence in education, TEFL, and teacher mentoring. I am part of the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), and I am also determined to continue learning and developing professionally.
All in all, I am a thoughtful practitioner, collaborator, and educational leader, a person who likes to enhance the quality of teaching, encourage the academic and moral growth of the students, and leave a trace in the betterment of the school and the general system.
