About

My name is Thomas Sor, a passionate and dedicated Science Educator from Ghana with 10 years of experience teaching Chemistry and General Science at the Secondary or Senior High School level. I hold both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Science Education from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana with Chemistry as specialism. I am writing to express my enthusiastic interest in the Chemistry or General Science Teacher position in your school.
Currently, I teach Chemistry at Sefwi Wiawso Senior High School and also serve as the Head of Science Department under the Ghana Education Service in the Western North part of Ghana, and I’m proud to have contributed to a 50% improvement in Chemistry pass rate at my school. I am currently seeking a position as a High School Chemistry or General Science Teacher through the J-1 Teacher Exchange Program in the United States of America. With ten (10) years of experience in teaching chemistry and general science at the Senior High School level, I am confident I possess the skills and passion necessary to contribute significantly to your vibrant learning environment.
What makes me a strong candidate for the J-1 Teacher Exchange Program is my commitment to global-minded teaching, my ability to manage diverse classrooms, and use of hands-on, student-centered learning approach. I integrate technology into my lessons, and always strive to connect science with real-world applications. Schools should consider hiring me because I bring not only solid teaching experience but also leadership, adaptability, and a genuine passion for inspiring young minds. I am committed to excellence, cultural exchange, and collaborative growth within a diverse learning environment. I have the ability to contributing to the development of Schemes of Work across all students’ age or grade levels. As a professional Chemistry Teacher or Science Teacher I have the ability in providing high-quality teaching and learning opportunities and care, guidance and support to secure the highest possible standards of achievement for all students.
In my previous teaching role at Sefwi Wiawso Senior High School under the Ghana Education Service, I successfully implemented inquiry-based learning, and project-based learning to enhance teaching and learning of science courses. I am proficient in adapting my teaching style to meet the diverse learning needs of students, utilizing a variety of engaging methods including hands-on experiments, demonstrations, interactive simulations, collaborative projects, and technology integration. My students consistently demonstrate strong understanding and achievement in science, evidenced by high test scores, participation in science quiz competition, and student feedback. Throughout my teaching career, I have had the privilege of working with students from diverse backgrounds and learning abilities. This has allowed me to develop a strong sense of empathy, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity, which I believe are essential qualities for creating an inclusive and supportive classroom environment. I have also developed a range of skills and expertise that make me an effective science or chemistry teacher.
My teaching philosophy is to help students to be well equipped with relevant skills and competencies of interest to further their education, live a responsible adult life or proceed to the world of work in order to achieve their goals and vision in the 21st Century. I am also adept at creating a supportive and inclusive classroom environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and engaging in collaborative learning.
My motivation to participate in the Teach USA program through the United States District Schools is driven by a deep passion for cross-cultural learning, professional growth, and educational impact. I am eager to bring my experience as a Secondary or high School Chemistry or General Science Teacher into U.S. classrooms, where I can contribute to student learning, while gaining new perspectives on teaching methods, curriculum delivery, and classroom management. Participating in this program will allow me to share Ghanaian culture, values, and educational experiences with American students and colleagues; learn innovative instructional strategies and integrate technology in new ways; also, grow as a global educator and return home, Ghana with enhanced skills that will benefit my students and school community.
I’m excited about the opportunity to join the Teach USA J-1 Teacher Exchange Program because I believe I can bring global perspectives, innovation, and enthusiasm to United States classrooms, while learning and growing from the cultural exchange myself.
