About
I have been working as a professional teacher for twenty-two (22) years now, teaching Mathematics to secondary school students in Ghana all this while. Moreover, I have faith in your school’s ethos of progress, partnership and pride which completely bring into line with my own beliefs and philosophy of teaching as an experienced professional teacher, warranting all students obtain lifelong success beyond the classroom.
I am a graduate teacher having obtained BSc. Statistics, BEd. Basic Education and M.Phil. Mathematical Statistics and M.A. Educational Leadership & Management for which I have used to teach mathematics at the secondary school as well as A-Level equivalent institutions in Ghana. I have also obtained qualified teacher status (QTS) from the Teaching Regulation Agency of the Department for Education, England in May, 2023 with which I believe could help me secure a teaching role in the United States of America and other parts of the world. Furthermore, I have a strong and solid subject matter in all mathematics topics taught at the primary, elementary, secondary and A-Level including precalculus, algebra, trigonometry, to mention but few. I also have awareness of the pedagogical strategies available for improving the learning and achievement of all students in mathematics such as inductive, deductive, heuristic or discovery, analytic, problem solving and project method; that I have over the years employed to teach to facilitate easy understanding of mathematical concepts on the part of my students.
For example, I used the heuristic and discovery strategies to teach “angles of elevation and depression in one of my lessons in Form 2 (KS 11), where some students climbed to the top of the flag pole on a cliff to observe the angle of depression while viewing the angle measure below the horizontal or below eye level as a colleague rides bicycle towards the flag pole from a distance on the ground”, as I looked on and supervise and facilitate the lesson. Consequently, students’ performance in the tests I gave to them on the topic showed that 82% as against the envisaged 50% before the lesson scored 90-100% of the task.
Without a doubt, I can confirm that I have a good understanding of curriculum developments in mathematics. I am a member of the professional learning committee (PLC) of Kwabre Senior High School with our main focus being designing a yearly curriculum for teaching all subjects, but in my case, I always prioritize that of mathematics, after which we present the various curricula to the Assistant Headmaster Academic, who in furtherance lead us to present it to the Academic Board Members of the school and to the entire teaching staff for deliberations, acceptance and implementation. I will be glad to bring this experience to bare when I am giving the opportunity to teach in your school to help in the design of the mathematics curriculum for effective teaching of the subject in sequential order to best improve student’s understanding and participation.
I have a relevant and recent teaching experience in the modern-day teaching profession. I have attended so many workshops that has kept me updated in new strategies of teaching, hence making me more skilful and knowledgeable in the use and incorporation of ICT tools to teach. Subsequently, I am optimistic that my vast skills and innovative assessment practice has benefited many students I have taught over the years. For instance, at Acherensua Senior High School, at the start of a lesson delivery in one of my mathematics lessons, on the topic ‘Coordinate geometry I’, I used “assessment as” at the introduction stage to ascertain the distance students walk from their homes and dormitories to the classroom; their weight when they visited the hospital or during sports activities to usher them into the lesson. Additionally, I used “assessment for” during the actual presentation of the lesson to monitor the progress of the lesson and finally used “assessment of” at the end of the lesson to diagnose challenges students encountered, keeping in track all forms of reward and motivation procedures.
Undoubtfully, I have good level of ICT skills, using ICT tools such as Zoom platforms, R-Console, iBox and SEIP IT tools to deliver lessons in the classroom and online learning; I am an excellent time manager and have the ability to prioritise and meet deadlines under pressure and finally, ability to encourage students in developing self-esteem and respect for others. The choice of your school has come as a result of my enthusiasm for and commitment to the achievement of the school’s overall vision for success at all levels. I am committed to safeguarding rules and promoting the welfare of all children. It is my pleasure to ensure that all children in a group/team share this commitment, either in the classroom or outside.
I believe it is of paramount importance to have high expectations of all students. My approach to behaviour and classroom management is in line with the policy of the school to encourage a positive learning environment. I find using positive reinforcement has a ripple effect on the classes that I teach. At Kwabre Senior High School, I regularly rewarded ‘positive points’ fairly and consistently for great work and behaviour in class. I find showing good examples of work inspires and motivates pupils to work to a high level and standard. These techniques, and frequent contact with parents, helps form healthy relationships with students which are built on mutual respect. I follow school policy when awarding sanctions, however, I also believe in a fresh start every lesson, allowing the students to move on from any previous situations when they start the following lesson to link the knowledge acquired in previously taught lesson in a related topic. I also believe that a well-planned lesson, which is accessible without being too easy, is pivotal in reducing the potential for disruption in a lesson. I have been known to teach lessons involving many levels of differentiation to allow all pupils to succeed. Students thrive in an environment where mistakes are just seen as learning points allowing them to take responsibility to re-learn something or to ask for extra help if needed.
As a form tutor, I have had pastoral oversight for the children in my care. For instance, when I was working in Konongo M/A Mines 'C" High school, I used to provide guidance to both students and parents on how to draw a good learning time -table and make good school choices for personal studies at home and this went a long way to improve students’ performance and attitude towards learning. By this singular effort, I can confidently say most of my students I have pastored are now in good standings in academia and health profession as doctors and nurses. I would monitor students’ progress through the online teaching reporting system, and I would have an informal chat with a student if I noticed they had had a series of behavioural incidents in school or had missed homework when I am given the chance in your noble institution. I would communicate with parents through students' planners and would make phone calls to home where necessary. I recently noticed one child in my tutor group had not signed up for parents' evening, so I phoned their parents to organise the teacher meetings for him, formally, twice a year I would have an academic monitoring meeting with each student to review their progress and to set targets. This pastoral role is hugely important when it comes to safeguarding. As a form tutor, I am best placed to notice any changes in the behaviour, and appearance, of my tutor group. If anything is noticed then I can make sure that it is reported, urgently, to the Designated Safeguarding Lead. Due to my high expectations, I’m regarded as a very good form tutor and I often have new staff, National Service Personnel and University Internship students who come to my schools to observe me to improve their own performance in this area.
To conclude, I believe that my knowledge of the subject matter and expertise, teaching experience, excellent work tenets and commitment to engage in continuous professional development (CPD), make me the ideal candidate for teaching role in any school Therefore, I am very much looking looking for very experienced, intelligent, innovative, hardworking and sel-motivated teacher in the school. I look forward to discussing these aspects further, at interview. Finally, may I take this opportunity to thank you for your time and consideration.
