About
My name is Ephraim Waihiga Muturi, a Kenyan citizen and an English Language Arts teacher.
I am writing to express my strong interest in participating in the J-1 Teacher Exchange Program as an English Language Arts (ELA) teacher. With over twenty-five years of experience teaching English and Literature at the secondary school level, combined with academic leadership and examination management experience, I am eager to contribute my skills to a U.S. classroom while actively engaging in cultural exchange.
I currently serve as a Senior Graduate Teacher and Head of Languages at Mwiruti Secondary School in Kenya. Throughout my career, I have taught English to diverse learners for whom English is a second language, implemented curriculum standards, assessed student progress, and mentored learners academically and socially. My teaching approach emphasizes student-centered instruction, critical thinking, communication skills, and inclusive classroom practices, values that strongly align with U.S. educational expectations.
In addition to classroom instruction, I have held leadership roles including Head of Languages and Head of Examinations, where I coordinated curriculum delivery, managed assessments and used academic data to improve learning outcomes. I have also served as a patron for debate and journalism clubs, supporting students in developing confidence, public speaking skills and global awareness.
I hold a Master of Arts in English Language and Linguistics and a Bachelor of Education in English and Literature, with specialized training in second language acquisition, discourse analysis and assessment. These qualifications, together with my extensive experience teaching ESL learners, prepare me well to support multilingual students in U.S. classrooms.
Beyond academics, I am deeply committed to the cultural exchange mission of the J-1 program. I look forward to sharing Kenyan culture, perspectives and traditions with students and colleagues, while also learning from the U.S. education system and broader community. I am adaptable, collaborative and fully prepared to meet licensure, orientation and professional development requirements associated with the J-1 program.
