About
I am Andrea Oshea P. Abellon, a J-1 teacher from the Philippines. I have seven years of teaching experience in the K–12 program, and during that time, I have learned that students walk into the classroom with different levels of readiness, learning needs, strengths, and experiences. I would address a wide range of skills and abilities by first getting to know my students as learners through observation, formative assessments, existing student data, and conversations with them. Additionally, my experience as a Reading Coordinator in a literacy program in the Philippines strengthened my understanding of the importance of identifying students’ specific reading needs and providing targeted support.
I would use the information I gather to differentiate my instruction by adjusting the level of support, the complexity of tasks, and the ways students can demonstrate their learning. For students who need additional support, I would provide strategies such as modeling, guided practice, sentence frames, graphic organizers, or small-group instruction. For advanced students, I would provide extension activities and opportunities to apply their skills. I also believe in flexible grouping, allowing students to work independently, with a partner, or in small groups depending on the learning objective and their individual needs. I would continuously monitor student progress through formative assessments and classroom observations and adjust my instruction when students are struggling.
I believe that differentiation does not mean lowering expectations. Instead, it means providing different pathways and appropriate support so that every student can reach high expectations. My goal is to create an inclusive classroom where all students feel supported, challenged, and given meaningful opportunities to succeed. I also value collaboration and believe that supporting students is a shared responsibility. I am open to working closely with fellow teachers, support staff, families, and other members of the school community to understand and meet the needs of every learner.
If allowed to join your team, I would be honored to share my experiences, knowledge, and best practices as an educator from the Philippines while also learning from the teachers and school community around me. As a J-1 teacher, I value the opportunity to exchange ideas, learn from different educational practices, and contribute perspectives that may enrich our students’ learning experiences. I look forward to collaborating with others, sharing what has worked well in my own teaching experience, and growing together as educators in support of our students.
